Game changers behind the scenes: Flyers' experiences in sports communication

Behind the scoreboard, multiple disciplines work hand in hand to shape professional athletics’ connection with fans. The field of sports communication plays a key role in controlling messaging and building meaningful relationships with audiences. Through a blend of creativity and media strategy, professionals influence how fans perceive teams and players – an experience two Flyers help shape.

Current University of Dayton student, Jade Morgan, is currently working as a community fund marketing and social media intern for the MLB's Cincinnati Reds. Morgan is a communication major with a media production concentration and a minor in business management.

“Communication offered a mix of my interests,” she shared, allowing her to merge media production and athletics into a career path. Her experiential learning opportunities with Flyer TV and ESPN+ student broadcasting were influential in her decision to turn passion into profession.

UD alum, Brooke Sutcliffe, also worked in sports communication through her internship with the NFL's Buffalo Bills. She graduated in 2022 with a communication degree with a public relations concentration and a minor in marketing. Sutcliffe was a public relations intern for the Buffalo Bills prior to her graduation, during which she assisted with press conferences, media coordination and player interviews. She detailed how fast-paced and competitive the industry is and explained that dedication is key to standing out, even with limited experience.

These Flyers' paths serve as a reminder that sports communication is built through experience, and that the stories behind the game are just as exciting as the action on the field.
